We all see justice. We know we are called to practice justice. But we have many questions about justice: Who decides what is due to each? On what basis is the determination made? What are my rights as a human being, as a member of society, as an individual relating to other individuals? Where do these rights come from? How do I know if I am being just to others and if others are being just to me? What is the role of government and law in all this?
Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk responds clearly to these questions and more: "Justice is not so much an obligation as a gift. It is an opportunity to take part in God's loving care for the world, to assist God in making the world everything it was meant to be." Justice is rooted in a deep relationship among humans who have been created by a just and loving God. The Church - the community of God's people - and the teachings of scriptures can point us in the direction of justice when we turn to them for guidance. Ultimately, justice belongs to God.
In eleven short chapters, the author provides us the opportunity to reflect of these foundational questions and to get a glimpse of justice that is larger than our private concerns, ye sembraces them, too. Questions for individual or group reflection are included at chapter ends. Appendices offer ideas for reading about justice and "A Catholic Framework for Economic Life."
