is a Diary Of Henri Nouwen's Final Year. Henri passed away on September 21, 1996-three weeks after writing the last entry in this remarkable personal journal.A year earlier he had embarked on a spiritual adventure. He took a year's sabbatical from Daybreak - a community for people with disabilities - where he lived and served, to reflect, write, and visit family and friends. Henri knew that prayer and friendship grew together like sunflowers in a garden, and that both needed continuous tending.
Wherever he goes, Henri is aware of goodness, even amidst weeds; he received kindnesses, recognizes them, is grateful for them, and returns them. To read his journal is to become his companion for a year - with Cardinal Bernardin during his illness, with a man with a disability who shows him the face of Christ, with a family of trapeze artist who teach him to fly, with his 93 year old father who reminds him that he will be remembered not so much for his books but for "what you have done for others, and the spirit in which you did it".
Sabbatical Journey is, in many ways, Henri Nouwen's last good deed on earth for all of us.
